Top 7 Upcoming Dramas: 2020

Time really flies when you’re busy. I didn’t realize it’s been so long since I’ve written a drama review because I’ve been busy with work and drawing on the side. Only four months into 2020 and we’re already seeing so many bad things happening in the world. With the current COVID-19 pandemic and everyone being forced to stay at home, there’s no better time to start some drama marathons! Here are my top 7 dramas that I recommend or am really excited about.

7. Born Again

I couldn’t get enough of watching Jin Se-Yun star in Queen: Love and War. I was so excited when I saw that she was starring in the upcoming Korean drama, Born Again. The summary doesn’t say much about the story but it sounds like it’s about reincarnation where 3 people in the 1980’s cross paths once again reincarnated as different people in modern times. Count me in! This Korean drama starts airing on April 20.

6. Some Day or One Day

I just finished watching this Taiwanese drama recently and it was a rollercoaster! If you like time travel with a bit of murder mystery, you’re in for a ride. Huang Yu Xuan is grieving over the death of her boyfriend when she discovers an old photo of a boy with the same face as him as well as a girl with the same face as herself. Next thing she knows, she travels back in time to 1998 after playing a song on a Walkman. One thing this drama excels in is its costuming and make-up. You’ll see some actors play double roles and some characters age through the story. The costumes and make-up really do a great job in portraying all these different characters. Some Day or One Day is available for free on Viki.

5. 365: Repeat the Year

If you were given the choice, would you travel back in time to fix something that went wrong in your life despite some dire consequences? 365: Repeat the Year looks like another intriguing time travel drama. I didn’t realize it was 24 episodes long.

4. Hi Bye Mama

It’s been 5 years since I’ve watched Kim Tae-Hee in a drama! Can’t believe it’s been that long but I’m super glad when she randomly appeared on Netflix in this Korean drama. Cha Yu-Ri died 5 years ago leaving behind her husband and daughter. She has an initiative to become human again in 49 days. Hi Bye Mama looks like a rom-com with a supernatural twist. Can’t wait to start binging this one! The premise reminds me of 49 Days.

3. WandaVision

Is this really any surprise? All Marvel shows catch my attention. But only ones with my favorite characters make it onto my highly-anticipated list. Scarlet Witch is one such character. I really enjoy her growing presence in the movies but I always think she deserves a lot more screen time because Elizabeth Olsen is a great actress in my opinion. Can’t wait to see just that on WandaVision. Supposedly the events in this drama tie in directly with the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

2. Joy of Life

This Chinese drama was actually from 2019. Fan Xian is a guy born in ancient China but somehow with knowledge of the 21st Century. There is much controversy and mystery about his family background and his intellect and wisdom attracts many people into his life. If you enjoy politics with some comedy, you’ll enjoy Joy of Life. While it’s nowhere as serious as Nirvana in Fire, it’s still enjoyable to watch especially during these dark times. Due to its popularity, a second season has just been announced and filming is slated to start soon in China.

1. Crash Landing on You

I am currently watching this on Netflix and am thoroughly enjoying it! Crash Landing On You is about an heiress to a South Korean conglomerate, Yoon Se-Ri, who was paragliding and randomly encountered a tornado which sent her flying into North Korea. While the premise sounds ridiculous, the magic only happens after that. This is one of those heartwarming stories where you grow connected with all the characters and don’t want them to go as the drama ends. The friendship and connections seem authentic and natural thanks to all the excellent actors. There are many bittersweet scenes showing the contrast between the rich and the poor. Even though some may be rich, they may not necessarily be happy. And even if some are poor, they can still be happy because they’re surrounded by loving friends and family. Plus, you don’t always see how life is in North Korea so this drama was an eye-opener. The crew consulted with North Korean defectors to make this drama as authentic as possible. And did I mention this story is from the same writer, Park Ji-Eun, who wrote My Love From the Stars? Honestly I’m enjoying Crash Landing on You so much more!
